St. John the Divine Orthodox Church
St. John the Divine Orthodox Church in Windsor, Ontario was built in 1917, with the Parish Hall completed in 1929. Originally a wood-frame structure, the church was severely damaged by fire in 1946, then rebuilt with brick by 1949. The church is crowned by two beautiful metal dome crosses, one of which had been damaged by lightning in the past. Despite previous attempts at repairs, the steeples were leaking, threatening the intricate artwork in the church interior.
Project Objective:
Provide a long-term solution to beautify and waterproof the two steeples, protecting the church interior; reglaze stained glass windows.
Sealcon Solution:
- Set up lifts to complete the work
- Cleaned and removed previous repair materials and removed damaged metal dome cross
- Repaired and cleaned the domes, detailing all seams with Tremco™ Dymonic® Simple Seal, an ideal application for metal roof joints
- Restored the look of the metal domes with an application of Tremco™ Solargard HB providing a beautiful finish and protection against the damage from sun, heat, cold, and water
- Reglazed all stained-glass windows
Result:
Not only were the steeples repaired and waterproofed (with a 20-year leak-free manufacturer’s warranty), the beautiful gold patina of the finish makes them truly shine. Reglazing the stained glass restored its beauty, while increasing the natural light in the church.
